Rugby World Cup fever in Wellington!

It seems like the Rugby World Cup has been the only topic of conversation around here lately!

With Quarter-Finals coming up this weekend in Wellington between South Africa and Australia and Ireland and Wales you can bet there will be a lot of people out on the street this weekend having a good time.

But if you’re feeling unsafe when you’re out in town don’t forget that there are the Walkwise ambasadors who can walk you within a short distance of the town centre or to transport.

We’d also like to hear people’s experiences of the RWC so far – what has it been like? Good? bad? Ugly? What’s the energy like in Wellington at the moment? If you would like to, please share your story in the comments below. If you have something that’s specifically street harassment related, feel free to post it using the “Share Your Story” form.

Arohanui and have a great weekend if you’re going to one of the games!

For me, it’s been awesome. I don’t know if I’ve ever watched so much rugby. It’s been great to share it with friends, and all the tourists I’ve spoken to have been choice.

I live in Wellington and i’m 18 years old and I can say that the atmosphere here is really great and i’m enjoying seeing the tourists around the city. Although me and my friend were in town shopping during the day and there were a group of old french people taking up the footpath so i dodged them by moving and walking to the little bit of the path that they hadn’t taken up and called my friend to follow me, she didn’t hear me and proceeded to walk through the french group, two men from the group stopped her from walking through them and wouldn’t let her past they were looking her up and down and everything, they eventually let her go and we laughed about it but i wondered if it wouldve been worse at a night out on the town. We also went clubbing later on that night and as soon as i got out of the car and walking to a club a younger french guy approached me and asked if i knew any good clubs, i said yeah i’m heading to one right now (i was on courtney place and this street is full of them so it was a pretty stupid question to ask) he then asked if him and his friends could come and follow us i said yeah but i wasnt waiting, we did lose them quickly. Also later on that night one of my friends met this australian guy who came over for the rwc with his mates and he asked me if i could hook up with one of his friends, i thought who the fuck do you think i am? and said no. So overall wellington has been different with all the tourists here and i’m glad they are having a good time but i cant wait until the city is full of kiwis again.
